Business Insurance in Maryland

Coverage for Maryland businesses of every size and kind, from an independent brokerage. We compare options across our carrier markets and explain the choices in plain language.

What Maryland law requires

  • Workers' compensation at one employee. With few exceptions, Maryland requires every employer with one or more employees to carry workers' compensation. The fine for going without it can reach $10,000, and officers with general management responsibility can be held personally liable. Deducting the premium from wages is a misdemeanor.
  • Auto liability of at least 30/60/15, plus uninsured motorist. Vehicles need at least $30,000 per person and $60,000 per accident for bodily injury and $15,000 for property damage, matching uninsured motorist limits, and at least $2,500 of personal injury protection must be offered.
  • Penalties for lapses. The Motor Vehicle Administration charges a penalty for each day a registered vehicle goes uninsured.

Coverage Maryland businesses review most

  • General liability. Covers claims that your business caused injury to someone or damage to their property.
  • Business owner's policy. Property and liability in one package, a common fit for small and mid-size businesses.
  • Property & equipment. Your building, equipment and inventory.
  • Commercial auto. Vehicles used for work. Dealers, repair shops and truckers usually need garage or trucking forms instead.
  • Workers' compensation. Required at one employee, with personal liability for responsible officers if it lapses.
  • Professional liability. Claims tied to advice, services or mistakes in your professional work.
  • Cyber liability. Data breaches, ransomware and the costs that follow.
  • Umbrella & excess. Extra limits above your liability, auto and employer's liability policies.
