Business Insurance in Florida

Coverage for Florida businesses of every size and kind, from an independent brokerage. We compare options across our carrier markets, including for coastal property, and explain the choices in plain language.

What Florida law requires

  • Workers' compensation, with different rules for construction. Construction businesses must carry workers' compensation with even one employee. Most other businesses must carry it at four or more employees, and non-exempt owners count toward the four. Farms must carry it at six regular employees or twelve seasonal workers. If a subcontractor has no coverage, its workers can count as the contractor's employees.
  • Officer exemptions in construction. In construction, up to three corporate officers or LLC members who each own at least 10% can file to exempt themselves, for a $50 fee. Everyone else on payroll still needs coverage.
  • Insurance on registered vehicles. Florida requires $10,000 of personal injury protection (PIP) and $10,000 of property damage liability on registered vehicles. Bodily injury liability isn't part of that minimum, but contracts and lenders often require it, and taxis need $125,000 per person, $250,000 per occurrence and $50,000 property damage. A lapse can suspend your license and registration.

Coverage Florida businesses review most

  • General liability. Covers claims that your business caused injury to someone or damage to their property.
  • Business owner's policy. Property and liability in one package, a common fit for small and mid-size businesses.
  • Property & equipment. Your building, equipment and inventory. In Florida, windstorm and flood terms deserve a close look.
  • Commercial auto. Vehicles used for work. Dealers, repair shops and truckers usually need garage or trucking forms instead.
  • Workers' compensation. Required at one employee in construction and four in most other businesses.
  • Professional liability. Claims tied to advice, services or mistakes in your professional work.
  • Cyber liability. Data breaches, ransomware and the costs that follow.
  • Umbrella & excess. Extra limits above your liability, auto and employer's liability policies.
