Getting set up in Miami

  • Two business tax receipts. Every business operating in the City of Miami needs a city Business Tax Receipt, and most need a Certificate of Use first. Businesses in the city also need a Miami-Dade County Local Business Tax Receipt. Florida local business tax receipts run October 1 to September 30, with late penalties starting at 10% in October (section 205.053).
  • Food trucks. Miami requires proof of valid insurance before a food truck can get its Business Tax Receipt.
  • Florida contractor licenses require insurance. Florida requires contractor license applicants to show workers' compensation as state law requires, plus public liability and property damage insurance, under section 489.115 of the Florida Statutes.

Local risks worth reviewing

  • Flood insurance discounts. In 2022 FEMA moved the City of Miami to Community Rating System Class 6, a 20% discount on most flood policies.

Common questions

Do I need both a city and county business tax receipt in Miami?

Yes. Businesses in the city need a City of Miami Business Tax Receipt and a Miami-Dade County Local Business Tax Receipt.

Does a Miami food truck need insurance?

The city requires proof of valid insurance before issuing a food truck's Business Tax Receipt.

Does business insurance cover flooding in Miami?

Standard homeowners policies don't cover flood, and business property policies usually handle flood separately too. Flood coverage is generally its own policy, and new flood policies usually have a 30-day waiting period, so it's worth checking before storm season.
