Trucking & motor carrier insurance

Trucking takes more than one policy. Auto liability, cargo, physical damage and general liability each protect something different, and contracts and regulators often require several of them together.

What it generally covers

  • Primary auto liability, often required at specific limits for your operating authority
  • Motor truck cargo for the freight you haul
  • Physical damage for your tractors and trailers
  • General liability for claims that don't involve driving, like loading docks or premises
  • Non-trucking (bobtail) liability for owner-operators under a lease
  • Trailer interchange and occupational accident options

Who usually asks about it

  • New authorities and owner-operators getting set up
  • Carriers adding units, drivers or new lanes
  • Owner-operators leased to a motor carrier
  • Anyone a shipper or broker has asked for cargo or GL certificates

Common questions

I have general liability. Am I covered on the road?

Usually not. General liability is designed to exclude claims from operating your trucks. Auto liability, cargo and physical damage are separate coverages, which is why many truckers find a gap after the fact.

What is motor truck cargo?

Coverage for the freight you're hauling if it's damaged or lost while in your care. Shippers and brokers often require proof of it.

What do you need to quote it?

Typically your DOT and MC numbers, a list of units and drivers, radius and commodities hauled, and loss runs if you've been insured before.

General information only. Coverage depends on the policy's terms, conditions and underwriting. A licensed agent can review what fits your situation.
